DESCRIBE BRETT AND HIS ROLE WITHIN WATERLOO ROAD SCHOOL:
Brett is a new pupil who has left a public school to do his A-levels at Waterloo Road. The sixth form is brand new for this year and he is one of the first students.
DESCRIBE BRETT IN 3 WORDS.
Confident, Troubled, Aloof.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT BRETT?
I like Brett's independence, his fieriness and youthful arrogance. I also like his car! He's got this great American jeep. I don't drive myself, I'm thinking about taking my test next year. I am not normally a fan of 4x4's but the one Brett drives is great.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE LEAST ABOUT PLAYING BRETT?
It was strange having to go back to wearing school uniform!
WOULD YOU LIKE BRETT IF YOU MET THEM?
Yes - I would like him. But I might think he is bit spoilt.
WHAT ARE BRETT'S LIFE VALUES AND DO THESE DIFFER FROM YOUR OWN?
Brett is yet to discover what is really important in life but has a strong sense of what he believes to be right and wrong and is not afraid to question things.
HOW ARE YOU SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT TO BRETT?
I definitely had a touch of his blind confidence and changeable emotion at school but never had the same conflicts with my family and I am not an only child.
DOES BRETT HAVE LOVE INTEREST?
Brett has a few potential love interests in the show but you'll have to watch to find out who they are!
WHY DO YOU THINK BRETT IS ATTRACTED TO THEM?
I think people from backgrounds dissimilar to Brett's are attractive to him.
WHICH OTHER CHARACTER DOES BRETT RELATE BEST TO?
He would hate to admit it but probably his father as although they don't get on, they carry similar traits
WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF ARRIVING AT THE WATERLOO ROAD SET?
The show is filmed at an actual school so it feels a lot less like a set than it could. I was just pleased to be involved in such a great show. It's quite different from my school so it didn't remind me much of being there.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL ACTING ROLE?
My first TV role was in Casualty and my first professional theatre role was playing Raleigh in Journey's End
WHAT ROLE ARE YOU BEST KNOWN FOR?
Hopefully this one!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STORYLINE COMING UP AND WHY?
Brett's relationship with his father was a great storyline for me because of the emotional content and also because I enjoyed my scenes with Nick Sidi immensely
BULLYING IS AN ISSUE THIS SERIES. IS BRETT INVOLVED?
My character is indirectly involved. But it happens without him realising. If he did then Brett would definitely do something about it.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BULLIED?
I think everyone has to a certain extent. Verbal jibes are just a part of being at school. Having said that I was never physically bullied, or victimised incessantly.
WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE A PERSON TO DO IF THEY WERE BULLIED?
Definitely tell someone.
WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT WATERLOO ROAD?
Scenes of emotion, filming scenes in the den. The people, cast and crew. Discovering Manchester.
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO DO AFTER FINISHING FILMING THE SERIES?
Go on holiday
HAVE YOU ANY LONG TERM GOALS OR AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE?
To continue to earn a living from acting.
HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SHAPE?
By walking everywhere and trying to eat as healthily as possible.
WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND BROUGHT UP?
Various parts of the south of England
WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
London
CAN YOU COOK?
Recently I've been trying to cook a bit more. I wouldn't say I had a signature dish yet but I do make a nice pasta sauce! In Waterloo Road my character Brett, makes a big gesture of looking like he's organised an a la carte meal but ends up just serving beans on toast!
WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ACTOR?
I don't think there was a particular defining moment. My first encounter was when I was about seven years old and I was dragged into a classroom to audition for the school play. I ended up playing an elf and I loved it. I think they had recognised I had a loud voice and being quite confident thought I'd be good in the play. I carried on acting in all the school productions and then when I realised I enjoyed acting more than anything else at school I decided to carry on. I auditioned for drama school and went to the Central School of Speech and Drama.
IS THIS YOUR FIRST BIG BREAK?
It is my first big TV job. I left drama school and got a role in Journey's End in the West End for five months which was an amazing training. I was also in Shrieks of Laughter at the Soho Theatre with Imogen Stubbs.
ARE ANY OF YOUR FAMILY IN THE MEDIA?
My Mum is a make up artist and my Dad used to work in regional television.
WHAT IS THE BEST BIT ABOUT FILMING?
I love filming at Brett's Den. He's got this room with all his stuff in it, where he likes to hang out. And it's my favourite place to film. It's really cosy and he has got great stuff, I love looking at it all. He's got a full bar, stocked with alcohol, and old back issues of Q magazine so I like reading up on loads of bands. There is a punch bag and nunchuks. It is a great space and I wish I'd had something like that when I was growing up but mind you it would have made me look very spoilt!
FAVE BAND?
I go through stages with bands where I just listen to mainly one at a time. I like all kinds of music but at the moment I'm really into a band called Oceansize, who are from Manchester incidentally. One of their songs 'Music for a nurse' is a beautiful, beautiful song.
LAST DVD YOU WATCHED?
I bought 'The Machinist' with Christian Bale which I'd seen before but it was in the HMV sale for five pounds which was a bit of a bargain.
FAVE ALL TIME FILM?
I don't really have a favourite. Anything with a strong storyline that's well acted. Films like: Se7en, Fight Club, American History X etc...
LAST MUSIC YOU DOWNLOADED OR BOUGHT?
Oceansize's Two Albums: Effloresce and Everyone into position.
