Tom’s in his late 30s and is one of Waterloo Road’s most popular teachers. The boys like him because he doesn’t push them, the girls fancy him because he’s a good-looking, male teacher – but he doesn’t take his fan club seriously. He tells himself this is education the modern way but it’s really ‘cos he doesn’t like taking a load of jotters home to mark. Tom’s from a solid working class family with a strong belief in the importance and value of education. Teaching seemed like the best bet to avoid serious hard work and be paid for talking about a subject he enjoyed.
Last term brought the shock revelation that Tom had a son he never knew, Josh, and as he tried to make up for the lost years it was his relationship with dinner lady Rose that paid the price. This term sees Josh and Tom living together for the first time and as Tom will soon learn, teenage boys can be a right handful. Always keen to give his son an element of freedom, Tom’s often reluctant to bring on the discipline but, as he’ll soon learn, being a best mate to your son isn’t always enough. Everyone needs a firm steer once in a while.
