Steph’s in her mid 40’s and is a pretty hopeless teacher. She has little control over her classes and the kids have no respect for her. Whilst this does bother her deep down, she manages to remain in denial about her failings. Both Steph’s parents are dead (they were both in their forties when they had her) and she has an older sister who lives in Australia. Her mother’s maxim of ‘treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen’ never really worked for the young Steph as she threw herself at a succession of suitors. She’s had a string of affairs with married men, none of whom were ever going to leave their wives – a brief romance with ‘Security Dave’ in Series 4 was the closest we’ve seen Steph get to a healthy relationship.

Steph might not think much of Rachel but she’s devoted to good friend Kim, helping her conceal baby Grace from the authorities. And that’s Steph – loyal to a fault. Everyone is fond of her, which leads them to turn a blind eye to the brutal fact that she’s a rubbish French teacher.

Last term was a professional struggle for Steph as Jo sent her back to retrain but with their working relationship now on track it seems things are back to normal. That is until Steph meets a handsome stranger in a bar – could this be the man to finally treat her right? Steph thinks so. But she hasn’t figured on becoming a step-mum and its shock all around when she realises she’s dating none other than Chris’ dad!
