Elizabeth Berrington

Ruby Fry is in her mid thirties and is Waterloo Road’s answer to Anthea Turner. Last term Ruby was airlifted in by Max to teach the kids how to cook because it’s now a compulsory part of the curriculum. She’s passionate about food and cooking but is an outright snob and has been known to look down her nose at both the Waterloo Road pupils and staff alike. Ruby’s job allows her to indulge her favourite pastime - showing the plebs how it’s done and she’s not above dispensing advice in areas outside of cooking if she believes her expert guidance is necessary.

Ruby didn’t go into teaching for the money – having always been supported by property developer husband John. But when he was declared bankrupt last term Ruby was forced to become the sole-breadwinner and their change in circumstances has been a real eye opener. As this term starts Ruby is suffering emotionally from the stress of their new lives and when Steph suggests she see the doctor Ruby finds herself reliant on medication to get through the day. As the pressure raises at work, so her pill taking increases. But it’s not just the tranquilisers that Ruby has latched onto and when Adam offers her support he finds Ruby clutching on for dear life. It’s not a situation that can end well and Ruby will reach crisis point before the term is through.
